With the Union army winning at the Battle of Gettysburg and sending the Confederate troops back to the south it meant a turning point in the Civil War. The Confederate troops after this battle in Pennsylvania would never again come to fight in the north. The reason for this was that Gettysburg was one of the few places that General Lee felt confident he could win, then when he got beat his confidence to go back into the north wasn’t there at all, so he stayed fighting in the south.
There are a couple of main reasons why Gettysburg was the turning point in the Civil War. One of the biggest things was the morale of the Confederate troops was way down considering they just lost an enormous amount of troops in Gettysburg. Another reason was that the confidence of Robert E. Lee and that of the entire Confederate army was way down. Without that confidence the soldiers were not prepared to fight and they would already be on the defensive before the fighting would begin. Another reason it was the turning point was that the Confederate army had to immediately go on the defensive because they had lost so many troops that even if they wanted to attack again they would be significantly out numbered in troops because of the incredible losses they took at Gettysburg.
Overall the Battle of Gettysburg was a great battle for the Union troops but an absolutely horrible defeat for the Confederates. With the Union winning the battle it basically shut down all hope for the Confederates to win the Civil War.
