Memories of a Teenage Girl
Tillie Pierce was born in 1848 and when the battle began, had lived all her life in the village of Gettysburg. Her father made his living as a butcher and the family lived above his shop in the heart of town. Tillie witnessed the entire battle and published her observations twenty-six years after the event.
Tillie attended the "Young Ladies Seminary" a finishing school near her home. She was attending school on June 26 when she heard the cry "the Rebels are coming!" reverberated through the town's sleepy streets:

President Lincoln had given his brief speech on November 19, 1863 in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. He saw meaning in the fact that the Union victory at Gettysburg coincided with the nation’s birthday; but rather than focus on the specific battle in his remarks, he wanted to present a broad statement about the larger significance of the war.

Reason- To heal those people who have been affected and to give them a sense of hope for the Union as a whole. It was also to address the brave men who died there and to dedicate part of the battlefield as a National Cemetery for those men who died there.
Main Idea- The biggest idea from this is that Lincoln wants to really show how the men that died there were brave and did everything they could to preserve the Union. He is primarily there to dedicate the cemetery for those that have fallen.
Significance- The major significance was that this speech reinstated hope in the country that change could be made, even though a countless number of troops just died 4 months before. In short, Lincoln gave the country a sense of hope again.
